What should I do right after the harvest?

For a shoulder mount, make no cuts up the throat or brisket and leave more cape than you think you need, well behind the front shoulders. Should my taxidermist be licensed?

Yes. Pennsylvania requires taxidermists to be licensed by the state, and lawfully taken, properly tagged game only. Waterfowl is its own case: mounting a duck or goose also requires the taxidermist to hold a federal migratory bird permit, a real license on top of the state one, and not every shop has it. Whoever ends up doing your work, ask about both before you commit, a good taxidermist will bring it up before you do.

Do I need a deposit? What should I bring?

A deposit at drop-off with the balance due at pickup is standard practice in this industry, commonly around half. Bring your harvest tag information, and reference photos of the animal if you have them, especially for fish, where colors fade fast and photos make the difference between a mount and a masterpiece.
